Cedar hedges are everywhere in Guelph and they're unforgiving — skip two years of trimming and they get leggy, brown out inside, and creep two feet into the yard. We trim hedges flat, straight and slightly tapered (wider at the base so light reaches the bottom growth), which is what keeps a cedar hedge dense for decades.
We also rejuvenate overgrown lilacs, dogwoods and spirea, and remove hedges and shrubs entirely — roots included — when you're done fighting them.
Late June after the spring flush, with an optional light touch-up in early fall. Avoid trimming in deep summer heat or late fall.
Brown interior wood won't re-sprout — cedars don't regrow from old wood. We can often reshape what's green, but a hedge that's brown right through is a removal candidate.
Cedars: modestly, in stages over seasons. Deciduous hedges and most shrubs tolerate hard rejuvenation cuts much better — some can go nearly to the ground.
Always — chipping and haul-away is included in every hedge price.
